Sarj - for Fromm.Lab Design Competition

Sarj is informed by the design and structure of traditional Bedouin camel saddles, which consist of a wooden seat secured with leather straps.

The stool integrates hand-knitted leather wefts into a flexible, self-supporting structure, emphasizing craftsmanship while exploring new material expression. Its knitted seat, constructed from leather yarn, forms a continuous textile surface shaped by alternating stitches that echo traditional craftsmanship. Each thread is handworked, producing a durable, flexible surface that translates individual skill into structural performance.

The aluminium frame is laser-cut to create integrated details that serve as both structure and ornament, highlighting the material’s purity and technical potential. The surface is resistant, waterproof, and visually refined, combining industrial precision with artisanal tactility. Sustainable production practices are embedded throughout: leather is recovered and vegetable-tanned, and aluminium is fully recyclable, minimizing waste and energy use.

SARJ merges essential form, functional performance, and high-quality craftsmanship into a single, refined object.
